A 9-year-old boy who was seriously injured was rescued by first responders battling a house fire in Dix Hills on Wednesday, Suffolk police said.

Police responded to a 911 call after a Dix Hills volunteer firefighter reported seeing a woman unconscious on a Marlin Street lawn, suffering a medical emergency just after 5 p.m. Upon arrival, three officers and the good Samaritan saw smoke coming from the house, police said.

Three Suffolk officers and the firefighter entered the home, using fire extinguishers to knock down the flames while one of the officers administered first aid to the woman.

Once inside the home, officers heard a child screaming from upstairs and, through heavy smoke, climbed the stairs and found the boy in a bathroom with severe burns, police said.

The boy was removed from the home and first responders provided first aid. He was then taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition, police said.

The woman also was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and believed to be non-criminal in nature.
