More than 10,000 Long Island customers were without power Sunday morning, PSEG Long Island said, as fierce winds battered the region, knocking down trees and power lines.

Multiple outages were reported across both Nassau and Suffolk counties. About 900 people were without power between Dix Hills and Huntington Station. In Smithtown, more than 500 people were without power, according to PSEG. Another 500 customers were without power near Great Neck and Manhasset.

"The wind is just really whipping up, and knocking limbs into power lines," PSEG Long Island spokeswoman Elizabeth Flagler said. "We have additional crews working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible."

Winds also knocked down trees on railroad tracks, delaying trains Sunday morning. A downed tree delayed Long Island Rail Road service Sunday morning between Farmingdale and Deer Park.

Service has been restored but there are residual delays of one hour, the LIRR said.

Several trains on the Ronkonkoma line had been held about 8 a.m.

The tree was down on the tracks near Pinelawn Station, damaging the third rail, according to the LIRR.

An unauthorized vehicle was found on the tracks near the Pinelawn Station about 6:30 a.m. There was no word on the extent of damage. There were no reported injuries.

Trains had been suspended in both directions between Farmingdale and Deer Park and had been held in Hicksville and Brentwood.

Earlier, police had also warned drivers that westbound Sunrise Highway was closed between Louden Street and County Line Road due to fallen trees there.
