Cops: Two Suffolk men arrested, charged with DWI with kids in car

Two Suffolk County men were charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated in separate cases after one crashed, with his young nephew in the car, and another, with two child passengers, was pulled over on a parkway, authorities said Friday. 

Gene Hamid, 60, of Huntington Station, had his 13-year-old nephew in his Dodge Dakota when he was going north on Clinton Avenue in Huntington and hit a Jeep Cherokee traveling east on Gerard Street about 3:50 p.m. Friday, Suffolk police said. 

Two of the four occupants in the Jeep were treated for minor injuries at Huntington Hospital, police said. Hamid and his nephew were not injured, officials said. 

Hamid of Winoka Drive was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger less than 16 years old, also known as Leandra's Law, and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip. Bail was set at $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash and a temporary order of protection was issued, according to online court records.

The nephew was released to a family member, police said. The Dodge Dakota was impounded, officials said.

In the other case, Howard Dwyer, 53, of North Babylon, was heading east on the Southern State Parkway Thursday night, west of Exit 39 in Babylon, when state troopers pulled him over and determined he was intoxicated, State Police said.

Police said two children were sitting in the back seat of Dwyer's vehicle.

Dwyer was charged under Leandra's Law and also with endangering the welfare of a child. Both children were placed in the care of a family member, police said. 

Dwyer was arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip. Bail was set at $15,000 bond or $7,500 cash and a temporary order of protection was issued, according to online court records.

Dwyer's attorney could not be reached for comment Friday evening.

Correction: The name of the Huntington Station man who was charged Friday with driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law is Gene Hamid. His name was incorrect in an earlier version of this story.
