Lauren Maywald, a second-grade teacher at Brookside Elementary School in Baldwin, got a surprise on Wednesday: She was one of 60 teachers in New York State to win an Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award. Principal Jennifer Brumford nominated Maywald, saying she "loves to embrace the latest technology to make learning more interesting for her students."
