The intersection of Nesconset Highway and New Moriches Road in Stony Brook, where a crash killed a motorcyclist early Saturday morning, Suffolk police said.

A 24-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with an intoxicated driver in Stony Brook early Saturday morning, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The crash happened shortly after midnight on Nesconset Highway, near the intersection with New Moriches Road, police said.

Jerry Diaz was on a 2022 Honda motorcycle going west on the highway when he collided with a 2017 GMC truck making a left turn from New Moriches Road. The Nesconset resident was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The GMC driver, Mark Anthony Giordano, was charged with driving while intoxicated. The 25-year-old St. James resident was held by police overnight and is set to appear in court on Saturday.

It’s unclear which driver had a green light at that intersection when the crash occurred, according to a department spokeswoman, who said police were still investigating.

Giordano’s charge of driving while intoxicated is a misdemeanor. Charges could be added or upgraded if police find that he broke traffic rules, according to the spokeswoman.

A news release from the agency asked anyone with information on this crash to call 631-852-6553.
