Mia-Renee Edwards, of Hempstead, killed in crash on Southern State Parkway, police say

State police were investigating a crash on the Southern State Parkway in the Town of Hempstead that left a driver dead early Sunday morning.
Mia-Renee S. Edwards, 19, of Hempstead, was pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Center after the 5:30 a.m. crash, according to State Police Trooper Brittany Burton. Edwards' 2002 gray Toyota Camry veered from the westbound lanes and left the roadway, hitting a tree near Exit 22N, the interchange with the Meadowbrook State Parkway, Burton said.
"It's still under investigation," Burton said. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631-756-3300.
No further information was immediately available.
The Southern State Parkway has consistently had the highest number of crashes on any single road over the last decade, according to a recent analysis by Newsday's nextLI. Between 2012 and the end of 2023, 137 people died and 846 were seriously injured in crashes on the winding 25½-mile parkway.
