A 63-year-old man was in critical condition after being rescued from the second floor of an East Meadow home that caught fire early Monday, Nassau police said.

Upon arrival to the 1:37 a.m. call of a fire on Eighth Street, first responders learned that a 66-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman and a 6-year-old boy had escaped the burning home but a man was still inside, police said.

Firefighters and police went to the second floor, where they located the man and removed him to safety, said Michael Uttaro, chief Nassau County fire marshal. Another resident was also helped from the home, Uttaro said.

The victim suffered extensive burns and smoke inhalation; he was transported to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, authorities said.

About 70 firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, bringing it under control in 20 minutes, Uttaro said.

No other serious injuries were reported; three occupants were evaluated at the scene by EMS personnel but refused further medical attention. None of the victims were identified by police.

The East Meadow Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Levittown and North Bellmore, Uttaro said.

The Red Cross offered to help displaced residents.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause. Uttaro said the suspected cause was an electrical problem.

No smoke alarms were present in the home, he said.
