Fire damages Roslyn Heights home; 1 hospitalized, 3 displaced

One person was taken to a hospital after a fire broke out at a Roslyn Heights home, the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office said.

About 11 p.m., on Sunday, the Albertson Fire Department responded to a call of a two-story single-family house fire on Schoolhouse Lane. A family member informed first responders "that an elderly female resident was unaccounted for and trapped in the burning home," Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said in a news release Monday.

Several firefighters "were able to locate the resident in the basement of the home and rescue her through the heavy fire conditions," Uttaro said. She was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and evaluated for critical injuries.

One firefighter was evaluated at the scene, but no other injuries were reported in the blaze, fire officials said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal's office and Nassau police, but it is not considered suspicious.

About 75 firefighters, including members of the Carle Place, East Williston, Garden City Park, Jericho, Manhasset-Lakeville, Mineola, New Hyde Park Roslyn Rescue, Roslyn Highlands, Westbury and Williston Park departments, brought the fire under control within an hour. Several firefighters arrived directly from another fire in Port Washington, Uttaro said.

Authorities deemed the home uninhabitable, displacing three residents.
