Long Island and much of the New York area are under a hazardous weather outlook and flash flood watch from midday Monday until Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service said showers and thunderstorms could produce heavy rainfall of more than 1 inch per hour that "will be capable of producing urban flooding."

The weather advisories are in effect for all of Long Island and all of New York City, as well as northeastern New Jersey and southern Connecticut.

There is also "a high risk of rip currents on all Atlantic Ocean-facing beaches through this evening," said meteorologist Lauren Nash of the National Weather Service in Upton.

The rainfall should be "mainly after 2 p.m.," the weather service said, with the chance of rain at 30 percent Monday afternoon and 60 percent Monday evening.

The weather service noted on its website that "organized severe storms are not expected," but "an isolated strong storm with gusty winds is not out the question. Locally heavy rain will be the main threat."

The forecast for the rest of the week includes a chance of showers through Thursday, and some sunshine Friday and into next weekend.
