A Freeport man died and his 50-year-old son was injured Monday afternoon when their car went out of control and crashed into a tree along the Meadowbrook State Parkway in Merrick, police said.

Frederick Deppert, 73, was pronounced at the scene, and his son, Frederick J. Deppert, the driver, was taken to the hospital for treatment of fractures in both arms, state police said.

The two men were traveling in a 2002 Lexus southbound on the parkway about 1 p.m., police said, when they attempted to exit eastbound at Merrick Road, police said. Their car failed to negotiate the curve, police said, mounted the shoulder and slid on the grass until crashing head-on into the tree.

The driver was taken by the Merrick Fire Department to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment, police said. His father was pronounced dead by Nassau police AEMTs, police said.

State police are investigating the incident.
