Long Island Rail Road will return to "a normal level of service" Friday morning after a week of headaches and confusion caused by an Amtrak derailment Sunday, rail officials said.

The LIRR said the repair work had been completed on the tracks in the East River tunnel.

"This has been a long week for our customers," LIRR President Helena E. Williams said in a prepared release. "I want to thank them for the resilience and patience they demonstrated."

The LIRR said the tracks were tested before full peak service is restored for the morning rush.
