Low pressure lingering northeast of Long Island and high pressure to the west deliver persistent gusty winds Friday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a small craft advisory through early Saturday.

Because of frequent gusty winds up to 30 knots, an advisory has been posted on all forecast waters through 2 a.m. Saturday and on ocean waters through 6 a.m. Saturday, the service's Upton office said.

The advisory covers Long Island Sound; Moriches Inlet to Montauk Point; Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet; Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet; New York Harbor, Peconic and Gardiners bays and South Shore bays from Jones Inlet through Shinnecock Bay.

Wind gusts Friday and into Friday night are likely to reach 25 to 30 knots and then slowly subside late Saturday morning as "higher pressure builds toward the waters and the low to the northeast weakens," the service said.

Friday's forecast calls for temperatures cooler than normal with mostly sunny skies. Daily highs in the low to mid 50s are expected for Friday and Saturday, the service said.
