High rip current risk Thursday at South Shore beaches on Long Island

There's a high risk for rip currents at South Shore beaches Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

The service's Upton office said in a statement the risk remains high for swimmers from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Beachgoers also could see lightning; there's a moderate risk for lightning at New York City beaches and a low risk in Nassau and western Suffolk, the service said.

For boaters, water conditions across Long Island are expected to remain below small-craft advisory levels through the weekend.
