Hollywood gets big New York State tax breaks

“Hollywood” continues to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of New York tax breaks.

The state gave away nearly $132 million in tax credits to film and television productions in the first quarter of 2016, according to a new report by the Empire State Development Corp.

“Person of Interest, Season 3,” a WB production, and “Blue Bloods, Season 4,” a CBS production, each received about $20 million in tax credits for the first three months of the year. WB and CBS topped the list of companies that have taken advantage of the program that’s been expanded under Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

New York gives away about $420 million annually in film-tax credits, which the administration says is necessary to compete with other states.

The film industry has been a generous campaign contributor to Cuomo; in 2014 WikiLeaks released emails that showed Sony executives working to bundle donations to the Democrat.
