Feds: Over $13 million in HUD grants to Long Island homeless programs

Nearly 35 programs for Long Island’s homeless will split a little more than $13 million in Housing and Urban Development grants, the agency said Friday.

This brings the total for New York to almost $215 million, HUD said in a statement.

The federal agency said the grants were “a record investment to support state and local efforts across the nation to reduce and end homelessness.”

A HUD spokesman was not immediately available to offer any further details.

The beneficiaries of the grants, which were awarded on Tuesday, include Bay Shore’s United Veterans Beacon House, Long Beach’s Casa Salva, and Nassau’s Project Homestart.

In a news release Friday, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) announced that grants in his district included $1.4 million for Concern for Independent Living of Medford and $405,043 for Options for Community Living of Smithtown.

“From our nation’s veterans to our communities’ senior citizens to others just trying to get by, there are so many critical local organizations that help our most vulnerable populations," Zeldin said in the announcement, "and it is vital that we ensure they have the support they need to continue their important work.”
