A Huntington Station man pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned Monday on charges that he shot and killed a Roosevelt man after an attempted robbery of his home last summer, prosecutors said.

Youssef Abdelgawad, 25, was charged on Sunday with second degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, following the fatal shooting of Jazzmen Bryant, 33, of Roosevelt on Aug. 21, according to a news release from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

Monday, he pleaded not guilty in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead. He was ordered to be held without bail, according to court records.

Bryant and four others were attempting to burglarize the home Abdelgawad shared with his brother and parents along Seventh Avenue in Huntington Station, when Abdelgawad's brother confronted the would-be burglars, one of whom was armed with a pellet gun, the release said.

As Bryant and his four companions ran away from the scene, authorities said Abdelgawad ran after them and fired twice at the group, killing Bryant with gun shot wounds to his back and the back of his neck.

Abdelgawad pleaded guilty in 2011 to unlawfully fleeing from a police officer and was sentenced to 60 days in Suffolk County Jail in that case, officials said.
