Injured skydiver identified as NYC man
Police have identified the sky diver in Calverton who was injured after a jump as 32-year-old Peter Hamilton of New York City.
Hamilton is currently in the surgical intensive care unit at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Hospital officials did not release his condition.
Riverhead Town police said Hamilton's parachute didn't malfunction, but he "apparently landed incorrectly," injuring his back.
The incident occurred at about 1:50 p.m. on Saturday. Hamilton was on a sky diving flight run by the Calverton-based Skydive Long Island, and had jumped from 13,500 feet in a Cessna Grand Caravan along with 15 others, said Rich Winstock, Skydive Long Island's safety and training adviser.
Winstock said that while sky diver error is typically to blame in landing accidents, he stressed that, because the case is still under investigation, he didn't know what happened here.
He described Hamilton as a veteran skydiver with more than 500 jumps to his credit.
Riverhead police said the Federal Aviation Administration sent an investigator to the scene on Saturday.
