Kids playing with sand pails and shovels. Boats in Long Island’s bays and the ocean, along with clammers in knee-deep water. Hundreds cramming the Hawkins Avenue Street Fair in Ronkonkoma.

Such were the festivities, large and small, on the Sunday of the Labor Day weekend. But while Long Islanders soaked up some of the last rays of summer Sunday, such activities may not be easily enjoyed on the holiday itself.

Scattered showers may pour on the last unofficial day of summer.

On Labor Day, expect possible rain to start after 1 p.m., and then become more likely toward evening. Some flash flooding could also occur with heavy rain Monday night.

And the front bringing all that moisture is going to stick around for Tuesday as well.

“A nearly stationary frontal boundary will impact the area into Tuesday. A frontal wave will then pass south and east of the area Tuesday night through Thursday," the National Weather Service said.

On Tuesday, there is a forecast of 75 degrees as the high, and the chance of precipitation around 80%, totaling between 1 and 2 inches. The showers may last into Wednesday, but after that sunny skies prevail through next weekend, forecasters said.
