HUNTINGTON/Toddler still in critical condition
A 2-year-old Dix Hills boy remained in critical condition yesterday, hospitalized after he was found unconscious Friday at the bottom of his uncle's backyard pool.
Ismail Sheikh's condition was unchanged in the pediatric intensive care unit at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The boy was pulled out of the pool about 7 p.m. Friday by his uncle, Muhammad Asif Ali.
He had been visiting the home with his mother, Maria Rodriguez, 26, and went into the backyard of the Downey Drive home while other family members were inside. A relative found the boy in the pool.
Sgt. Brendan Forte of the Suffolk Police Second Precinct was the first officer on the scene and administered CPR to the boy in the backyard until other officers arrived.
Forte continued resuscitation efforts as he carried the toddler and dashed to a patrol car. He continued CPR until arrival three minutes later at Huntington Hospital.

NASSAU/3 hurt in separate accidents
Two pedestrians were in critical condition yesterday after they were hit by cars in separate accidents in Nassau County, police said.
In a New Cassel accident, an 11-year-old boy was crossing Prospect Avenue near Sheridan Street at 6:28 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a 1997 Mercury driven by Dora Amaya, 48, of New Cassel, police said. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was admitted in critical but stable condition with bleeding on the brain. Neither the driver nor her passenger were injured.
In the second accident, in East Meadow, two men, ages 23 and 24, were seriously injured when they were struck by a car at 11:23 p.m. Saturday as they tried to cross Hempstead Turnpike near Newbridge Road, Nassau police said. They were hit by an eastbound Toyota driven by Shirley Snyder, 84, of Levittown. The men were taken to a hospital for treatment. One was listed in critical but stable condition with head trauma. The nother was admitted with a broken bone and was listed in stable condition. The driver was not injured.
