EAST MEADOW/Police: Man returns to bar with rifle
A man who had been kicked out of an East Meadow bar Tuesday returned a short time later and pointed a rifle at the bartender before being subdued by patrons, who held him for arriving police officers, Nassau County police said.
William N. Karas, 56, of 569 East Meadow Ave., East Meadow, was arrested on charges of second-degree menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Police said the weapon was loaded, but could not immediately provide additional details about the weapon. Karas lives just a few doors down from the Paddock Pub, on East Meadow Avenue, where the incident took place about midnight, police said.
It also was not immediately clear why Karas was kicked out, or how much time elapsed between the time Karas was kicked out of the bar and when he returned with the gun. Police did not say how many patrons were in the bar when the incident occurred, but they said patrons managed to wrestle the rifle from Karas and hold him for officers.
Karas was scheduled for arraignment yesterday in First District Court in Hempstead.

ROSLYN/School emptied after bomb threat
Students and faculty were evacuated yesterday from Roslyn High School after a note was found indicating the threat of a bomb, a spokesman for the school said.
Spokesman Barry Edelson said a school staff member found a note printed with the date -- 10-17 -- and the word "bomb."
Police were notified shortly after 11:30 a.m., and the building at 475 Round Hill Rd. was evacuated, Edelson said.
After a search indicated no threat was present, Edelson said, students and faculty returned to the building a little after 1 p.m.
Yesterday's threat follows a bomb threat Tuesday at the Roslyn Middle School, at 375 Locust Lane, Edelson said.
A note was discovered Tuesday with the word "bomb" printed out, and police were notified just about the time of student dismissal, Edelson said. Students were allowed to go home, Edelson said, and police, after conducting a search, did not find any evidence of a bomb.
Parents were notified about both threats via email and the district's automatic phone-messaging system, Edelson said.

WEST HEMPSTEAD/More bank robbery charges for man
A Lakeview man being held in the Nassau County jail on charges he robbed four banks in 2011 was charged Tuesday in an additional bank robbery and an attempted bank robbery late last year in West Hempstead.
Frank Jackson, 47, of 578 Champlain Ave., was charged with third-degree robbery in connection with a holdup of the Roslyn Savings Bank on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead on Nov. 14 -- and was charged with third-degree attempted robbery for the failed robbery at the same bank branch Dec. 5.
Nassau County police said Jackson is the same man arrested on Jan. 27 and charged in a string of bank robberies in November and early January.
Court records indicate Jackson was being held at the jail in lieu of $450,000 bond or $225,000 cash bail on those charges when he was charged with the additional robberies Tuesday.
His next court appearance on the original charges is Oct. 29, according to court records. He remains in county jail.
