When Alycia Chizever and Vincent Steves met at Great Neck South Middle School in 2009, it was a case of déjà vu — well, almost.

Three decades before, Steves’ mom and Chizever’s dad had also been acquainted — although they never dated — while both were in Great Neck South High’s Class of 1982.

“Vinny used to joke when we were younger that we were family friends,” said Chizever, 28, a third grade teacher in Great Neck.

Their romance began to blossom in the summer of 2013, when Chizever suggested Steves apply to the camp where she worked as a counselor.

“His mother tells the story that he ran home and said, ‘I need to sign up for camp,’ and she said, ‘Slow down! Why are you so eager?’ ” Chizever said.

They never officially went on a date, but they found themselves bonding while hanging out at each other’s homes, the beach and the pool. “It was like ‘Grease,’ a summer love,” Chizever said.

Steves, 28, added, “After hanging out at camp for most of the summer, I worked up the courage that August to ask her to be my girlfriend and thankfully she said ‘yes.’ ”

Steves, a communications manager at The Wall Street Journal, proposed in 2021 on an overnight trip to Manhattan. Chizever said she thought they were celebrating his brother’s birthday until check-in at The Beekman Hotel. On the bed, “marry me” was spelled out in rose petals. They celebrated with Champagne and dinner at an Italian restaurant, she said.

The couple married on Aug. 26, 2023, at the Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success.

The 225 guests could walk or ride a golf cart to the cocktail hour/reception and sipped personalized cocktails: Blushing Bride Margaritas for her, Old Fashioneds for him.

Said Chizever, “It was nice to have all your loved ones who’ve been with you since day one be in one room together.”
