Helen Lund

Helen was born Dec. 11, 1910, in Southport, N.C., and grew up in Philadelphia and Brooklyn. She was a bookkeeper in Manhattan hotels in the Depression and married Johannes Lund, a Norwegian sailor, in 1929 and had two children, Kenneth, now deceased, and Shirley. They lived in Queens, moving to North Valley Stream in 1940. Helen cared for newborns for the Spence-Chapin Adoption Agency and after being widowed in 1969 was a playground monitor for Alden Terrace Elementary School in North Valley Stream. She's been a charter member of the Elmont Fire Department Engine Co. No. 4 Ladies Auxiliary for 54 years and lives at home in North Valley Stream, where she celebrated her birthday with family. She has nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
