Centenarian: Helyn Horn

HELYN HORN, 107, was born Nov. 4, 1904, in Jersey City, N.J., and grew up in Westfield, N.J. After graduating from high school in 1923, she attended the New Jersey State Teachers College in Newark, graduating in 1925 as a kindergarten teacher. She was a dedicated teacher and continued taking courses to improve her skills. She moved to Long Island in 1927 and lives in the house she and her husband bought in Oceanside in 1933. She was offered a full-time teaching position in Oceanside in 1949 and spent the remainder of her career teaching kindergarten for 23 years in School 5. She is the oldest member of the New York State Teachers Retirement System. She celebrated her birthday at home with her family. She has two children, Richard and Adele, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
