Centenarian: Morris Welte
Morris Welte was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Manhattan, where he lived until he was 9. He was raised in an orphan home upstate until he was 16 and later attended radio school and earned a license in radio communication and a scholarship for ship-to-shore communication and Morse code. During World War II he was a bomber pilot, and after the war he settled in Southampton and worked at Mackay Radio Station, retiring after 25 years. He went to school studying clock repairing and owned a clock repair business for 35 years. Morris is an avid Yankee fan and met Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. He and his wife of 34 years, Audrey, live in their home in Southampton. He celebrated his birthday with family and friends.
