There’s yet another reason to visit — or revisit — the Bronx Zoo this spring and summer. A brand-new immersive exhibit based on the TV show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood opened May 22 and will run through Sept. 7.

Featuring interactive displays and live performances, the experience brings to life favorite characters from the beloved PBS KIDS series by Fred Rogers Productions.

“Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood at the Bronx Zoo is for both kids and kids at heart,” said Rachel Libretti, director of events, programming and rides at the Bronx Zoo. “While every interactive is tailored to young children’s curiosities, visitors across generations will enjoy elements like the Trolley, an icon with a legacy that began in ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ and continues with series like ‘Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood’ today.”

There will be lots to keep the young ones busy, such as live performances, a seek-and-find nature walk, human-sized characters to meet, photo opportunities and imaginative play stations. The language is geared to younger kids, but it’s likely adults will learn a thing or two as well.

Characters in the live show, performed on stage by costumed actors, will explore animal habitats from around the world, comparing them to neighborhoods.

Activities are designed to be accessible to neighbors of all ages and abilities and will integrate both Spanish and English.

The lessons and impacts of watching “Daniels Tiger’s Neighborhood,” which debuted in 2012 and builds on Fred Rogers’ legacy of teaching social and emotional learning skills, can continue well into the teen years, according to study from the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA.

“As a mom to an energetic toddler, I’m always looking for hands-on activities that spark her imagination and help us create lasting memories together,” said Meghann Kelley, marketing director for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates the zoo.

“I grew up watching ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ and am now raising a daughter that loves Daniel Tiger, which makes this experience especially personal for me.”
