A Floral Park student has turned a robot-themed video game concept he created into a self-published book.
Dylan Ryan, a freshman at Floral Park Memorial High School, wrote “Robo and Friends,” an 80-page book, during a seven-month span starting last November.
Ryan said he originally posted the book onto an online art community called
DeviantArt, which issued him an award, called the “Daily Deviation,” that gives an artist a chance to be seen by a large audience. After receiving the award, he decided he wanted to reach more people by publishing the volume through a website called Bookemon with the help of his English teacher Emma Martin.
“It’s about this robot named Robo and a bunch of his friends that go on this wild journey to end the forces of evil that try to attack their town — and their world,” Ryan said. “I’ve always had a taste for robots, even when I was a child.”
Ryan said he created his original video game, also called Robo and Friends, using a kit for a platform called Bloxels that his grandmother gave to him for his 12th birthday. The book’s cover art was created by Floral Park student Damian Chin.
Ryan, 14, also plays violin and is a member of the Chess, Creative Writing and Video Game clubs.
