If you’re accustomed to standing on the shoreline gazing out at Long Island waters, maybe it’s time you tried a new vantage point.

A personal watercraft, commonly referred to by the brand name Jet Ski, offers a relatively simple entry into the realm of water sports, and if you don’t own one, not to worry. There are several spots on the island where you can rent one for a short stretch, offering either guided tours or the option to ride independently within certain parameters. And according to state law, you do not need a license to drive a personal watercraft if you’re under the supervision of a rental operator.

“Operating a Jet Ski is not all that difficult to learn,” said Ron Arcate, spokesman for East End Jet Ski in Hampton Bays. A throttle to accelerate, handlebars to steer, an on/off switch and rules of the waterways is about all you’ll need to know before you’re off and zipping through the surf.

Safety is the No. 1 concern for all rental shops, and you’ll receive a condensed but thorough form of instruction before they set you free on your machine.

“You’ll be fitted with a [life] jacket, directed to where you can ride and given a crash course on handling,” Arcate said. East End Jet Ski has staff observing from both land and sea during your ride within a designated section in Shinnecock Bay.

Anna Schmitt, 29, of East Islip, said she has rented Jet Skis several times from Long Island Jet Ski Rentals in Brookhaven.

“During the summer of 2016, my father and I visited the rental shop two to three times per week,” said Schmitt.

She added she has been back many times since.

“One of the standout features of this Jet Ski rental service is the freedom it offers,” she said. “I was allowed to explore freely within a wide range.” Schmitt said that gave her the opportunity to ride at her own pace and fully enjoy the experience on her own terms.

She said she felt safe throughout, adding that the staff took the time to teach her through videos and pictures.

“Overall, it was a fantastic adventure,” Schmitt said. “I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for some fun and a bit of thrill.”
