Shaking off doldrums: Long Islanders share their photos
"I’m not a fan of the snow,” said Dianne Boothe, perhaps epitomizing how most of us are feeling about the cold weather as spring unfurls — even if we do like the fluffy white stuff. (Paying her no mind, Boothe’s quarterhorse, Baxter, revels in the snow in his backyard.)
“The only thing snow is good for, for me, is taking pictures,” she added. And good for us! In these pages, we get a last look at Long Islanders’ photographs of their adventures during the cold months — and we look forward to spring photos.

Siblings' snow day
Molly and Murphy are Irish doodle siblings who live in Bellport. The brother and sister, who will celebrate their first birthday today, enjoyed playing and bonding in the snow in their backyard in early February.
Plowing through
Baxter, Dianne Boothe's 19-year-old quarterhorse, gallops through her backyard after a January blizzard dropped nearly 2 feet of snow. "He loves the snow, to run through it, roll through it 50 times," she said. "He loves to bury his nose in the snow."
A lake view
"I fish many days at the lake, and the sunrises are spectacular," Dan Fliller said of this photograph he took late one day a Massapequa Lake. Fliller says he spends many hours at the lake, where he meets people — and their dogs — as they are walking by.
Catching quick bites
Gerry Corrigan captured these piping plovers at Fire Island National Seashore, struck, he said, “by the pattern formed by the small, nimble birds attempting to quickly feed in the short intervals between the waves.”
A new year experience
Giovanni Bilello, 7, and his mother, Angela, enjoyed attending the Town of North Hempstead’s Chinese New Year event at Town Hall in Manhasset. “It was our first time attending the event, which included a chance for children to make a Chinese calligraphy craft,” Angela said of the event on Feb. 9.
Cold serenity
“Love the ice reflections,” Carol Hannon said of what inspired her to capture this image of a mute swan in Setauket Millpond at Frank Melville Memorial Park in East Setauket. She took the photo while taking a walk on a chilly Sunday afternoon in February.
Indoor sunning
Tula, a mixed-breed rescue from Brookhaven Animal Shelter who is about 6 years old, relaxes in the sun, her favorite place, says Dan Wright.
On the shores of spring
Adam Bundy says he captured this "magnificent" sunset near North Ferry in early March. "The sun was hitting at the right point," he said.
Hot tub on a budget
Amelie and Knox enjoy a dip in their homemade hot tub. “We had seen this on Facebook and decided to try it out,” said their mom, Rachel. “They got a kick out of being outside after a snowstorm in their bathing suits!”
