Love Story: Dov and Kelly Haims
Dov and Kelly Haims of Rockville Centre never would have guessed they'd be married when they first met 10 years ago. Kelly tells their story.
Dov and I met in 2001 when we both worked at Sam Goody at Roosevelt Field. I was 17, working during the day and going to school at night. Dov was 26 and had been working there for nine years. He was actually my boss. There was zero interest, on either part. He was very professional, so there wasn't even a friendship. After less than a year I left the job.
Over the years we would occasionally send each other instant messages, but that was about it. Once, I e-mailed him and asked if he would go with me to see the band Coldplay at Nassau Coliseum. None of my friends liked Coldplay, but I remembered he did. He got back to me too late, so I never saw Coldplay, and we never hung out.
Then in 2008, I was going with a friend to listen to a band. Dov was online, so I asked him if he wanted to go. He agreed to meet us there.
When he walked over to us I didn't even recognize him. I hadn't seen him since working at Sam Goody. He had lost a considerable amount of weight, gotten a haircut (he used to have a ponytail!) and shaved off all of his facial hair. It was like it was another person. I told my friend that he was someone I would have been checking out. I had never thought I'd ever be attracted to him.
We became best friends instantly, and then became inseparable. Dov and I are complete opposites and complement each other very nicely. We learn a lot from each other.
The ironic thing, for us, came a few months later when we heard a radio station was giving away tickets to a Coldplay concert. We called and won!
We couldn't believe it. We could've seen Coldplay years before, but it just didn't happen. Before the concert arrived we decided to become a couple.
We both like Halloween, so we married on Oct. 31, 2010. The reception was decorated for the holiday, and most of our guests were in costumes. We had a trick-or-treat candy bar, candy apple wedding favors and costume contests. A Coldplay song was played after we said our vows and for our first and last dances.
If you told us 10 years ago that we would be married today, let alone friends, we both would not have believed it. Now we can't imagine being with anyone else.
