Nassau County Museum exhibitsfocus on women

All three exhibits at the Nassau County Museum of Art right now deal with women.

The main show, "The Subject is Women," offers 57 Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings by or about women, including Cassatt, Degas, Pissarro, Renoir and Modigliani. The exhibits all run through Feb. 28.

Latinas

The museum says it has put on this exhibit of works by women and images of women "in response to a burgeoning Latin American population on Long Island." The 30 works on display come from the museum's collection of Latin American art and from private and other public collections.

Among the artists represented are Brazil-born Vik Muniz, whose photograph "Medusa Marinara, 1998" appears at right. (Known for his work with food, Muniz has made detailed replicas of Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," one using jelly and the other peanut butter.)

Also in the exhibit are works by Colombian figurative artist Fernando Botero and El Salvador's Ana Maria Martinez. Tours in Spanish are available.

Eye of the beholder

The third exhibit features sculpture, photographs and works on paper and canvas by six contemporary female artists, including several by Christy Singleton, whose "Fiona, 2007" is at far right. Singleton's silicone/mixed media busts "are wry commentaries on the pitfalls of plastic surgery and the pressures women feel to combat the aging process," according to artnet.com.

The museum, at 1 Museum Drive, off Northern Boulevard in Roslyn Harbor, is open from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
