Susannah Schaefer, of Huntington, has received the Charles B. Wang Community Service Award from the New York Islanders. Schaefer has served for 11 years as the president and CEO of Smile Train, a nonprofit that provides corrective surgery for children with cleft lips and palates, and she has helped expand access to health care and cleft care in the 70-plus countries where Smile Train operates. The award comes with a $25,000 donation to the recipient’s related charity from the Islanders Children’s Foundation.
Michael R. Ebert is an education researcher and has worked for Newsday in various capacities since 2003. He was part of an 11-person team named as 2008 Pulitzer Prize finalists for investigative coverage of the LIRR's platform safety issues.
