Way to Go! Brookville student Elisabeth Muehlemann
Elisabeth Muehlemann is no stranger to helping others. A senior at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School in Brookville, she leads the school Peace Club and has spearheaded a string of charity events, including a student concert that raised $5,300 for the nonprofit Doctors Without Borders.
The club also held a Christmas party in December for residents of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens Village that included homemade snacks and gifts of gloves and sweatshirts.
"These are genuine people faced with bad circumstances," said Muehlemann, 18. "Some of them don't get many visitors, so it feels good to see them."
Under Muehlemann's direction, the Peace Club also held a coat drive in February to benefit the Family Service League in Huntington and two food drives to benefit New Ground, a West Hempstead nonprofit.
Outside of school, she volunteers at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Centerport. She traveled with other parishioners last year to Nazareth Farm in West Virginia to help rebuild homes for the needy.
Muehlemann is also a counselor at the Huntington Historical Society and on her school's varsity soccer team and Junior States of America debate team.
