A Greenlawn teenager with a passion for dancing is one of only 10 students chosen nationwide for the American Ballet Theatre’s 2015-16 National Training Scholar Program.

“I was so excited when I found out I was chosen,” said Cynthia Ryan, a freshman at Harborfields High School. “Whenever I’m dancing, I’m feeling my happiest.”

The classical ballet company’s prestigious national student program covers the cost of the ABT’s Summer Intensive Program, as well as a portion of summer housing and year-round training expenses.

This is the second consecutive year that Ryan, 15, has been selected for the National Training Scholar Program. It will be the third time she participates in the Summer Intensive Program.

The summer program consists of five days of training per week over five weeks and culminates in a special performance, Ryan said. Last summer’s selection was the dream scene from “Don Quixote,” she said.

Ryan has studied ballet since she was 3 and currently trains at the Lynch School of Ballet in Huntington. She was slated to perform in the company’s production of “The Nutcracker” this weekend in the Huntington High School auditorium.

In school, Ryan is in the French, Art and Habitat for Humanity clubs. She also volunteers at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Centerport.
