Danielle Yokemick is helping homeless teens one pair of jeans at a time.

The West Babylon High School senior coordinated a campaign at her school earlier this month that resulted in the collection of 137 pairs of new or gently used jeans for Teens for Jeans.

That group is an initiative of dosomething.org, a community-service-oriented website, in conjunction with clothing retailer Aéropostale.

Yokemick said she was researching community service ideas when she discovered the program online and thought it would fit well at her school.

"It's just so simple," said Yokemick, 18. "Jeans are something that everyone has in their closet."

Principal Ellice Vassallo "jumped right on board," said Yokemick, who promoted the 10-day drive through a Facebook page, fliers and morning announcements at the school. Two donation bins were set up in the school lobby and the final collection was delivered to a nearby Aéropostale store, which will distribute the jeans to local homeless shelters.

Yokemick is a member of her school's Leo Club, Spanish Honor Society and Student Association.
