Way to Go!: Katie Skinner, Riverhead High School
Katie Skinner, a senior at Riverhead High School, is one of 25 winners nationwide of the 13th annual Scholar Athlete Moustache of the Year Award issued by the Milk Processor Education Program and USA Today.
In total, more than 41,000 students applied nationwide.
"With bigger national scholarships, it's always hard to tell what they're looking for," said Skinner, 18, who is her class valedictorian. "I was really excited and honored by this."
Winners were picked based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and a 75-word essay describing how milk is part of their everyday life and training regimen. Celebrity judges - ranging from tennis player Andy Roddick to NBA player Steve Nash - selected the final winners.
Skinner received a $7,500 college scholarship, an invitation to a weekend at Disney World in Orlando and a chance to appear in national milk ads.
In school, Skinner is part of the cross-country and winter track teams, chamber orchestra and National Honor Society. She plans to study operations research and financial engineering this fall at Princeton University.
