Way to go: Lauren Reisig of Massapequa H.S.
Lauren Reisig, a sophomore at Massapequa High School, won first place in the senior individual exhibit category of National History Day at the University of Maryland at College Park. She was Long Island's sole winner in any category.
Reisig's project, "Portioning Off the American Dream," studied the creation of 17,447 affordable four-room homes in Levittown for soldiers returning home from World War II.
"The American dream is becoming out of reach, and there might be a need for these type of homes again," said Reisig, 16, who used 1950s-era fonts and mint-green colors to make her three-panel project look more like a "real museum exhibit."
Reisig first competed at the regional level at Hofstra University and the state level in Cooperstown, winning her category at both events. She received $1,000 for winning at the national level.
Other top Long Island finishers were a team from Hewlett High School - Jordan Friedman, Michelle Roter, Amanda Villani and Hadas Werman - placing fifth in the senior group documentary category.
Jessie Kurz of Woodmere Middle School finished seventh in the junior individual exhibit.
