A student at Sanford H. Calhoun High School recently spearheaded the face-lift of a Veterans of Foreign Wars' hall.

Joseph Ciniglio, a senior at the school in Merrick, tackled the project last month in which his tasks ranged from power washing to painting the exterior of VFW Post 2770, which is on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore. He also planted annual flowers.

Ciniglio, a Boy Scout, carried out the beautification efforts as part of his service project for Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of Troop 225 in Merrick.

"You've got to give back to the veterans for everything that they have done for our country," said Ciniglio, 17. Of the Eagle Scout project, he said: "It kind of helps you to grow as a person; it really teaches you how to manage a big, big project."

To raise funds for the project, Ciniglio said he coordinated a car wash last month at Advanced Auto Parts in Merrick. Some materials for the renovations were also donated by area stores including Aboff’s Paints and Ace Hardware in Bellmore and Perfect Run Printing in Merrick.

Ciniglio is also a member of his school's National Honor Society, Robotics Club, and cross country and track and field teams.
