A Copiague teenager has been elected to the Key Club position of Division 2 lieutenant governor.

Messiah Reid, a sophomore at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, is responsible for the support and growth of clubs within his division at seven Suffolk County high schools: Amityville, Bellport, Copiague, Lindenhurst, Patchogue-Medford, Sayville and William Floyd. There are 27 divisions statewide.

Copiague’s Key Club is the largest in New York, with 158 paid members, Reid said.

“I’m very excited for my job,” said Reid, 15. “I’m looking forward to meeting members and getting more clubs activated.”

One of Reid’s first tasks in the post was attending the 2016 New York District Leadership Training Conference last month in Albany, where he learned about the importance of public speaking and quick thinking. More than 800 Key Club members from across the state were there.

Reid’s duties range from overseeing publication of a newsletter to officer training and support.

“I’ve seen so much growth in Messiah,” said JoAnn Erwin, Copiague’s Key Club adviser. “He’s our most active member and is first to sign up for community service opportunities.”

Reid also is recording sergeant for Suffolk County Police Explorers Post 555. He is a member of his school’s marching band and Medical and Adopt-a-Highway clubs.
