An Amityville student used his knowledge of robotics to find a unique way to solve a popular puzzle game.

Raiphy Jerez, a ninth-grader at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, recently programmed a Lego robot to successfully solve a scrambled Rubik’s Cube in less than 3 minutes. The impressive effort was part of an enrichment project tackled by the teen for his Lego Robotics class, with assistance from teacher Ron Weber.

To create the puzzle-solving robot, Jerez conducted extensive research to identify the algorithms and programming sensors necessary for the robot to do the job, school officials said.

Jerez himself is able to solve the cube in less than 1 minute.

“I know how to solve a Rubik’s Cube, so I wanted to see if I could teach something else to do it,” Jerez said of his motivation.

For his next project, Jerez plans to build a robot that stands on two wheels using Lego Mindstorms EV3, an advanced design technology that requires specific sensors to maintain the robot’s balance while it moves on two wheels.
