A Riverhead High School student has been making her mark through a variety of advocacy and volunteer work.
Taliyah Moore, a sophomore, is a member of the Youth Court at the Town of Riverhead Justice Court and volunteers at Goodwill African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Riverhead, where she is involved in two choirs.
In addition, she serves as a junior volunteer for the Riverhead-based nonprofit Butterfly Effect Project, which is designed to empower young girls by giving them the tools to help achieve academic success and an emotionally stable and self-confident future.
“It helps us to open up boys’ and girls’ minds and focus not so much on social media and violence,” Taliyah, 15, said of the nonprofit’s efforts.
Most recently, Moore received the Access to Better Learning Experience (ABLE) Award for her advocacy of the disabled community from Transformative Educational Developmental Services, a Coram-based nonprofit. She and the other award recipients were honored during a ceremony at Bellport Country Club.
Moore has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair.
“We nominated Taliyah for her outstanding attitude, dedication to community service and leadership skills,” said Eileen Manitta, director of special education for the Riverhead school district. “She is hardworking, fun-loving and a caring young lady.”
Moore is involved in her school’s chorus and recycling efforts and is a member of the Council for Unity.
