A Middle Island teen is one of 10 national finalists for the 2015 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
Longwood High School senior Sean Rausch was named for excelling in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Two winners will be announced at an awards banquet Friday in Manhattan.
Rausch, 17, learned he was a finalist in a surprise visit from a Wendy’s representative and his parents on Nov. 10.
“Our [football] team was in the film room when I found out,” he said. “I felt very honored. All of the hard work I have put in is starting to pay off now.”
To be considered, Rausch submitted five one-page essays on topics such as the origin of his drive to succeed and the role sports have played in his development. His school won a $2,000 prize because he was named.
He has been on the High Honor Roll for four years, was named an AP Scholar, and earned a perfect score on the math portion of the SAT. He also was named a 2015 Suffolk Zone Award winner based on academics, leadership and physical performance.
Rausch is the varsity football team’s captain and is on the varsity baseball team. He also is a member of the National Honor Society and foreign language and business honor societies.
