Carl Safina of Stony Brook is the winner of the 2012 Orion Book Award from Orion Magazine, a bimonthly publication devoted to creating a stronger bond between people and nature, for his efforts addressing the human relationship with the natural world in his 2011 book, "The View from Lazy Point: A Natural Year in an Unnatural World." Safina is a professor at Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and a visiting professor in the Center for Communicating Science. He is also an ocean conservationist, lecturer and the author of six published books.
