Debbie Schmitt of Riverhead was recently named Amherst Davis Memorial Farmer Citizen of the Year at the Long Island Farm Bureau's 9th annual Awards Gala based on her achievements in the field. Schmitt and her family run the Philip A. Schmitt & Son Farm in Riverhead, a 175-acre wholesale and roadside retail vegetable operation, and she also heads Schmitt's Farm Stand on Sound in Riverhead. In addition, she has served as chairwoman of the bureau's Board of Education and has represented Long Island on the New York Farm Bureau's Promotion & Education Committee.
