Dmitri KharzeevProfessor
Dmitri Kharzeev of Port Jefferson recently received the Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany -- as well as a prize of nearly $80,000 and the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at Goethe University in Frankfurt -- in recognition of his "scientific excellence," the organization said. Kharzeev is a professor of physics in Stony Brook University's Department of Physics and Astronomy with a joint appointment as a senior scientist in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Physics Department. He was chosen for predicting the chiral magnetic effect in the quark-gluon plasma, a form of matter that existed in the very early universe and is recreated for the study of its subatomic components at BNL.
