Elaine Smith of East Norwich has received a 2012 Nursing Excellence Award in the category of education and mentorship from the website Nurse.com. Smith, who was nominated for the honor by colleagues, is vice president of nursing education for North Shore-LIJ Health System, overseeing about 11,000 nurses throughout the health system. She has also served as corporate director of nursing education for North Shore-LIJ as well as director of nursing education at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center, where she began her career as a junior volunteer at age 14.
