Gerard D'Aversa of Garden City was recently honored by The Italian Community of St. Brigid in Westbury at their annual Gala Italiano based on his volunteer work on a 10-day medical mission to Ghana in 2011. D'Aversa, an ophthalmologist and partner with Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island in Westbury, performed sight-restoring surgery in the African nation and trained the clinic's director to perform modern cataract surgery using phacoemulsification. He is also a member of the New York Ophthalmological Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
