Iris Grover of Freeport was the inaugural winner last month of the Citizen of the Week Award from Freeport-based nonprofit Literacy Nassau based on her "outstanding commitment to promoting and fostering adult literacy." Grover, now retired, previously worked as a guidance counselor for Middle School 226 in South Ozone Park and before that was a reading teacher in the East Meadow School District. She trains roughly 50 tutors annually through Literacy Nassau's tutor-training workshop and has been a member of the National Council of Jewish Women.
