Joanna Fowler of Bellport is one of 23 women worldwide to recently receive a Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering Award from the American Chemical Society for her "exceptional accomplishments" in the field. Fowler is a senior chemist and director of radiotracer chemistry, instrumentation, and biological imaging at Brookhaven National Laboratory, which she joined in 1969, and is credited with helping to synthesize a radiotracer used in hospitals to measure the changes in brain circuits disrupted by drug addiction and other diseases. She is also a faculty member at Stony Brook University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan.
