Joe Satriano of Oceanside has received the 2012 Everyday Hero Award from the American Federation of Teachers for going "above and beyond the call of duty" on the job or in the community. Satriano is a recently retired math teacher of more than 30 years in Roslyn and founder of the Susan Satriano Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which he created in 2006 after he lost his wife to breast cancer. The foundation provides college scholarships to high school seniors with a parent who currently has cancer or has already succumbed to the disease.
