Julia Rivera of Brentwood recently received a 2011 Hispanic Heritage Award from the Town of Islip based on her "exceptional contribution" to the local community. Rivera has served as a nursing assistant in the maternal-child unit at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip since 1978 and serves as the hospital's perinatal education coordinator. She was a leader of a local Girl Scout troop and is a member of the Brentwood PTA and Brentwood Youth Association.
